Removing Yourself As An Impediment To Your Team In Delivering Value

Session Host:  Valerie Morris
Session Time:  11:15 - 12:00
Session Location:  Lenossa I - B

The session format was interactive and individually focused on identifying:
  • What activities have you been doing over the past (pick a short time horizon like 2 weeks)?
  • one item per sticky
  • What activities should you be doing or do you want to do - that were not part of your first set of stickies
  • Determine and indicate somehow which of your activities are
    • value add to your team
    • required waste (like timesheets, etc.)
    • waste (have no value to anyone)
  • Look at the circle of influence
    • Inner circle - what I own and can control by myself
    • Influence circle - what I can influence with others/shared control
    • Organization and Beyond circle - what I can have a smaller influence on
  • Determine where your activities (things to stop, start, and keep) fit on the circle of influence
  • Create an action plan starting with the inside circle and working outward
  • This technique can be done at multiple levels and across multiple roles.  This can be a self introspective exercise that you do on a (frequency of your choice) to help you focus your energy on value add things.  It can be a retrospective technique for Scrum teams.  I have used it with a leadership team to help us understand how to help teams and stop doing things that don't help teams.  As a reality check into my perception of "helping teams," I ask the team for their input in the value, waste identification part of the exercise.  It's the best way to invite transparency into the manager's perspective of what they do for teams.
